Thunderstruck!

The weekend of 11th and 12th January hosted 2 important races in our calendar; the Despy Medal and the Tarwin River Marathon. The Despy Medal was set up 5 years ago by Derek Despy to provide a ‘level playing field’ to all sailors with the chance to win a race series. The 2 race series runs with sailors placing under a personal handicap system based on last season’s results and gives slower sailors an advantage. However, good winds, above forecast expectations, meant that the results actually reflected more on the ‘better’ sailors with Matt Kiely coming second and Ripper winning the Medal. Well done to everyone on a bracing afternoon and on behalf of all members, a special thank you to Derek for supporting the event; we wish him well.

Sunday saw some 10 dinghies, 5 cats and 6+ windsurfers set off between 10:30 and 11:30 by division to sail up Anderson Inlet towards the mouth of the Tarwin River. The race is always a gamble on wind strength, tide, sand banks and equipment (or crew) failure over the course’s 10+ km or so. This year on the return leg, a severe thunderstorm, bringing torrential rain, wind gusts up to 18kn, plus lightening made things even more interesting. Skippers were faced with a decision to carry on, or seek shelter at the shore, however with very poor visibility adding to the confusion most tried to keep track of their nearest boat and shadow them to ensure everyone got back safely. Only Jeff in his Sabre had to be rescued due to a cracked centerboard casing. Lead boats were home in under 2 1/2 hours, and the stragglers a little over 3. All in all everyone enjoyed the adventure and stories were told as we enjoyed a late lunch and refreshing beverage. Mel took first home in C Division. Matt in B, Andrew in the Cats and visiting Ash representing the Windsurfers. A big thank you to Broadbeach Inverloch Gym (where many of us are members to keep our strength up!) for their continued support for this unique event.
