A chilly evening greeted members attending the 2024 Presentation Night on the 18th May, however this was more than made up for with an open fire in the yard providing a warm focal point to socialise around before and after dinner. BYO proteins were complemented by Susan’s salads and garlic bread plus a spread of moreish desserts courtesy of members, gave us our daily sugar fix, yum!
Matt Keily was acknowledged as SGYC’s star performer, both at club races and in state and national Impulse titles, showing as a club we bat well above our weight! Matt won many of the race series based on VYC handicap, overall ‘B Division’ and was once again crowned ‘Club Champion’ for the season. Other winners during the year on VYC handicap were: Shaun Freeman/Commodore’s Cup, Pete Keily/Serious Surf Stuff. For back calculated yardstick (Handicap) series results, these were: Simon Wilson/Leongatha Toyota, Craig Stewart/ Commoodre’s Cup, Andrew Biram/John Parry Memorial, Michael Jongebloed/Serious Surf Stuff, Steve Horton/Debenham Easter Series.
Club ‘A Division’ Champion went to Shaun Freeman and ‘C Division’ Champion was Paula Horton. Any winners who were unable to attend can collect their awards and/or prizes at the start of the 2024/25 season!
The Ralph Drake Brockman Trophy for most improved sailor over the season was awarded to Terry Kirby, who was also nominated as ‘Best Club Member’ 2024 for his great work in stepping in to co-ordinate and assist running the January training program. Terry remains as Training Captain on the committee: great job mate!
Tanith Ryan took home the first capsize of the season award and we look forward to seeing what new part she adds for next year. And in a strong late pitch towards the end of the season, Simon Wilson scored the NASA trophy with a recreation of the sinking of the Titanic with his son in the club Corsair. Contrary to popular belief, the Corsair will capsize if you try hard enough – and immersing a mobile phone in saltwater is not recommended! A fitting end to Commodore-ship? Hasta la vista, baby…
