SGYC sailors were well represented at State Championships over the March long weekend, the largest contingency being 7 sailors at the Impulse Sates at Somers. Matt, Toby and Geoff finished in the top ten, and put on a Masterclass demonstration winning the Masters, Grand Masters and Great Grand Masters titles respectively. George finished a credible 15th (out of 34 entries) in his first outing in an Impulse courtesy of Graeme Cox – time for a change of boat George? Wind conditions started southerly on the Saturday shifting to very light northerlies on the Sunday and sailing was cancelled Monday, giving a total of 6 races.
Sam won the little known category of ‘Most carnage over the series’ when he found rock beats centerboard casing in a collision and now has a few repairs to perform. Henry and Simon kept everybody honest by staying towards the back despite the allure of up front glory!
Our good friend Jono Pulham of APYC took line honours with a strong win to be crowned State Champion.
At Rye, Wayne and Shaun competed with their Taipans. Wayne sailed sloop rig with Abbey to a 3rd place and both thoroughly enjoyed being two up on trapeze. Shaun sailed to 5th in the 4.9 cat rig class.
Further afield at Altona, wind conditions were much stronger with the second race being cancelled due to gusts over 25 knots. Rob, Craig and Pete flew in with their Mozzies and Pete secured 2nd place in the kite class despite not realising there was a puncture hole in one hull and sailing with an extra 20kg of water on board, then trying to ram his adversary! Craig secured a very useful 5th place out of 19 cats, which maybe takes some pressure off a pending 3rd NASA award nomination… And just in, Jake and Russell were last seen screaming along in that 25 Knots wind on the Nacra, laughing like banshees! Max Rounds also had his Hobie 18 there: that’s a lot of club cats!
Back at the club, social sailors made the most of summer conditions to drift lazily through Saturday and Sunday and enjoy the long weekend.
Well done to all SGYC sailors in their respective classes: great to see we continue to take the fight out beyond Inverloch!
