Five sailors from South Gippsland Yacht Club, Matt Kiely, Gary Plozza, Mark Membrey, Jeff Miller and Toby Leppin made the journey to Port Albert on the 4th May to do their best to win the annual South Gippsland Regatta. Port Albert had 4 boats competing and as this Regatta also included an Impulse Travellers Series race, another 3 boats were added to the fleet. Lots of support crew came from SGYC to enjoy the day and the beautiful sunshine.
Race 1 conditions were very light and it was a bit tricky to get to the start. One “red boat” was seen to be stuck up against the pier at one stage!
There were good results in Race 1 with Toby in 1st Place and Matt in 3rd. The afternoon race again had light conditions so some of our sailors decided to call it a day and not sail the afternoon race. SGYC placings for the afternoon race were another 1st for Toby and a 5th for Gary. Unfortunately for us a fleet penalty was given to anyone who didn’t sail the afternoon race so the bottom line was that Port Albert got over the line by a slim margin and retained the South Gippsland Regatta Trophy. Well done to those who participated and travelled to support our sailors and a huge thank you to Port Albert Yacht Club for their organisation of the event, for providing a great lunch, a fantastic afternoon tea and prizes. Next year maybe!
