Australia Day Regatta

The South Gippsland Yacht Club held its inaugural Australia Day Regatta over 3 days. A series of 6 races was held with Saturday’s racing in light to moderate wind with a very strong outgoing tide. Sunday’s races were in moderate wind and Wednesday’s wind was moderate to strong. It was great to have more than 20 boats taking part in the regatta in varying conditions.

The generous sponsorship by Southcoast First National Inverloch of this series was very much appreciated by the prize winners. Race results were determined by the usual handicaps as well as for this series by Back Calculated Handicap and the winner in A Division was Pete Kiely, second was Rob McNair both sailing Mosquito Catamarans. B Division Monohull winner was Henry Mueller, Impulse, second Garry Plozza, RS Aero, and third place Sam McVilly, Impulse.

An encouragement award was presented to Julian Madigan who is relatively new to sailing and completed most of the races in a borrowed Impulse sailing dinghy.

Brothers Matt and Pete Kiely were the winners using the Australian Yachting Federation Handicaps. Pete won the A division and Matt B Division sailing his Impulse.

A great regatta and special thanks to the OD’s, Boat drivers, tower race recorders and kitchen helpers for all their work and particularly, Neil Warren for calculating results and handicaps each day. Members and their families were treated to a free Australia Day lunch that consisted of BBQ sausages in bread with coleslaw followed by lamingtons, jam and cream pikelets. Thank you to Susan and her team for such a treat.

Great weather and great racing together with good times and friends!
