Australia Day Regatta

L to R: Paula, Craig, Steve, Francis, Sam, Simon, Brad, Ivan

With no wooden dinghy regatta this year, Francis Sullivan stepped up to the mark with his business South Gippsland Radiology as sponsor of the inaugural Australia Day Regatta. With 6 races over the ‘long weekend’ we had a real mix of conditions: almost becalmed at the weekend, then 20 knots on Tuesday, making for both frustrating and full on sailing in the one event!

A handful of our sailors were away competing in a regatta at Macrae and this presented an opportunity to mix up placings with some new names in the top spots. Excellent prizes, donated by SGR, were awarded on the Tuesday and Francis also generously supplied afternoon nibbles to accompany a well earned beverage following racing. Placings by division were:

  • A Division:
    • 1st – Shaun Freeman (Taipan 4.9)
    • 1st – Brad Westaway (Windrush)
    • 3rd – Craig Stewart
  • B Division:
    • 1st – Steve Horton (Impulse)
    • 2nd – Sam McVilly (Impulse) [good one Sam!]
    • 3rd – Ivan Abbott (Impulse)
  • C Division:
    • Paula Horton (Laser)

Two special awards for “Most Entertaining” were also presented to Ivan Abbott for going around the start/finish buoy twice to starboard and once to port on the same pass! And Simon Wilson demonstrated how to parallel park an Impulse half way up the beach whilst looking backwards…

Thanks to all sailors, Susan and her kitchen team, supporting members and our sponsor Francis for a great long weekend’s sailing.
