Light winds for Port Albert

A perfect Autumn morning’s sunshine greeted a hardy bunch of sailors last Sunday at the Port Albert Yacht Club for the annual South Gippsland Regatta. This regatta has been held for nearly 40 years and with 14 off- the – beach boats competing it made a lively sight for spectators.

SGYC was represented by Matt, Pete, Keith, Rob, Shaun and Simon with moral support from Wayne to guard the trophy. Our sailors came with the hopes of fast reaches across open waters and defending the trophy over the two races, but like most everyone else were frustrated by light winds.

South Gippsland YC won the day on points, although Port Albert was pleased with its improved performance competing against South Gippsland’s highly awarded Impulse sailors in Div 1, mono hulls. Al Finlay and Libby Nicol competed well for Port Albert, however we were all left in Matt’s wake as he romped home to win both races. In Div. 2, catamarans, Pete won race 1 with Jake Lurati taking race 2. Overall, adjusted times were very tight within the top 4 placings. Simon tried to balance the competition with a penultimate and lucky last placing, but the SGYC team politely ignored this and took home the trophy regardless.

A social time was enjoyed by all over a bbq lunch, then afternoon tea accompanying the presentations for this final event of the season. Our thanks to Port Albert Yacht Club members for their hospitality, especially Jenny & Rob Davies, Andrew MacAulay and all the kitchen helpers.

PAYC Commodore, Andrew MacAulay congratulates Commodore SGYC, Wayne Smith on the club’s winning performance.
